The author of the practice
People sometimes assume therapists choose this work because we have the answers. For me, it was closer to the opposite. I became a therapist because I know what it is to sit in the middle of a chapter you did not choose — and to wish someone would sit with you in it without flinching, fixing, or hurrying you along.
I have always believed in stories. It's in the name of this practice. And somewhere along the way, I came to believe something that now shapes every session I hold: people make sense. Not that everything we do is healthy, and not that every pattern should stay — but that behind nearly every struggle is a story that explains it. Anxiety makes sense when you know what someone learned to brace for. Perfectionism makes sense when love once had to be earned. Staying quiet makes sense when speaking up used to cost too much.
Most of us have never had a single person look at our story and say, your feelings make sense. I became a therapist to be that person — and I mean it when I say it, because there were seasons of my own life when I needed to hear it too. The care at this practice is not theoretical.
My training took me through a doctorate in counselor education and supervision, licensure as a counselor in three states, and research into how people navigate painful family relationships. But the heart of it has stayed simple: I sit with people in the hard chapters, and I help them remember they are still the author.
Every season is a chapter. No chapter — however heavy — has to be the whole story. If you are ready to start a new one, I would be honored to help you write it.

The practice
Novel Wellness Counseling is built on a simple conviction: excellent care is a series of thoughtful choices — the time a session gets, the way the first phone call is handled, the calm of the room, the follow-through after. We keep the practice deliberately small so that nothing about your care is generic.
Speaking & teaching
Dr. Bourque speaks with organizations, churches, schools, and professional audiences — on parental estrangement, family relationships, and mental health. Tell us a little about your event and we'll be in touch.
